Douglas Craig Emhoff was born in Brooklyn, New York, on October 13, 1964, to parents Barbara and Mike. He spent his early years in New Jersey with his older sister, Jamie, and younger brother, Andy, before moving to California with his family at the age of 17. He graduated from Agoura High School in 1982, with the yearbook mentioning his contributions to the school paper and participation in sports such as tennis and skiing.
